Wine of the Week: Matua Cooler 4-Pack
We’re shaking things up for this week’s Wine of the Week! Instead of reaching for a traditional bottle, we’re popping open something a little different, a little nostalgic, and undeniably refreshing: the Matua Cooler 4-Pack.
If you’re looking for a crisp alternative to heavy cocktails or standard canned drinks, this is your new go-to.
What Makes It Special?
The Matua Cooler takes two iconic New Zealand favorites, crisp Sauvignon Blanc and delicious kiwi fruit, and unites them with sparkling water for the ultimate canned refresher.
Flavor Profile: Expect vibrant citrus notes, bright acidity, and a touch of tropical fruit. Crisp Matua Sauvignon Blanc is blended with sparkling water and a splash of kiwi fruit flavor to deliver a crisp, effervescent finish.
Light & Clean: At just 80 calories, 0g of added sugar, and 5% ABV per 250 ml can, it gives you all the crisp flavor of a great white wine in a light, sessionable format.
Ready-to-Go: Packaged in sleek 250 ml aluminum cans, it’s single-serving convenience at its finest, perfect for park picnics, pool days, or outdoor gatherings where glass isn't ideal.
A Quick Sip of History
Matua wasn't always a global icon. In 1969, brothers Bill and Ross Spence started winemaking out of a small tin shed in West Auckland. Driven to carve a new path for New Zealand wine, they planted an experimental "fruit salad" vineyard to test different grape varieties.
One variety stood out above the rest: Sauvignon Blanc.
In 1974, Matua produced 400 bottles of New Zealand’s very first Sauvignon Blanc. Back then, it was an obscure variety in the region, but that bold experiment kicked off a global phenomenon. Today, Matua is one of New Zealand's most awarded wineries, and the Matua Cooler continues that long tradition of innovation.
How to Serve & Pair
Grab a well-chilled can straight from the cooler, or pour it over ice with a fresh wheel of lime or a slice of kiwi.
Food Pairings
Salty Cheese Boards: The bright acidity cuts through rich, salty cheeses like feta, aged gouda, or creamy goat cheese.
Fresh Fruit Salads: Complements tropical fruits like mango, pineapple, and berries effortlessly.
Light Summer Fare: Great alongside grilled chicken skewers, fish tacos, or fresh green salads.
Stop by this week to grab a 4-pack of Matua Cooler and discover how refreshing canned wine can be!
