Podere Castorani - Cadetto Pinot Grigio

To truly understand how Podere Castorani became one of the undisputed masters of the Abruzzo region, we have to travel back to 1793. It was during this era that the renowned ocular surgeon, Raffaele Castorani, became the first proprietor of the estate, laying down the roots of a winemaking legacy that would transcend centuries.

Following the conclusion of the First World War, the property entered an ambitious new era under the stewardship of Antonio Casulli. Casulli took over with a grand vision: to expand production and fiercely elevate Castorani's reputation across Europe. Yet history is often cyclical. Upon his passing, the vineyard was split apart, triggering a painful, decades long decline. For many years, the estate slept, waiting for a passionate hand to wake it.

A Modern Revival: From the Racetrack to the Vineyards

That revival finally arrived in 1999. Driven by a tenacious group of close friends and the absolute obstinacy typical of the Abruzzo people, a plan was hatched to bring the historic estate back to life. Leading this charge was none other than Jarno Trulli, the celebrated Italian Formula One racing driver. Trulli, along with his business partners including Lucio Cavuto, committed completely to coaxing the luster of yore back into the estate's ancient soil. Working painstakingly together and in harmony with nature, they transitioned the vineyard to entirely organic farming, nurturing thirty year old vines into a fresh era of peak health.

Where Tradition Meets Formula 1 Engineering

What makes Podere Castorani uniquely fascinating today is how Jarno and Lucio have combined ancestral winemaking traditions with cutting edge technology. Drawing on Jarno's deep connections within motorsport, they collaborated with his former Toyota Formula 1 engineers alongside the University of La Tuscia to develop a highly sophisticated, custom, cool air humidity controlled drying room for their grapes.

This high tech drying system allows the winery to safely dry grapes to craft a stunning, deep, Amarone style Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, alongside a rare white Amarone style blend utilizing indigenous Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Malvasia, and Cococciola grapes. Dubbed the exclusive "Jarno range," its very first vintage debuted in 2000 to critical acclaim.

Yet even with this precision engineering, the cellar stays deeply rooted in Old World secrets. Instead of standard stainless steel, the winery ages its juices in traditional cement tanks. Furthermore, they opt for oversized 500 liter tonneaux over standard 225 liter barriques, utilizing a custom curation of Russian, French, and American oak to shape the wine's unique profile.

The Magic of Alanno's Terroir

Today, the lush 75 acre estate sits in a picture perfect setting within the municipality of Alanno, in the province of Pescara. Perched beautifully at 350 meters above sea level, it occupies the sweet spot between the dramatic peaks of the Majella National Park and the cooling breezes of the nearby Adriatic Sea. This geography grants the vineyards exceptional sun exposure by day and chilly mountain winds by night. The resulting intense thermal range yields grapes with concentrated flavors, lively acidity, and a truly precious, unmistakable regional character.

Wine of the Week Highlight: Cadetto Pinot Grigio Terre d'Abruzzo IGT

While Podere Castorani is famous for its flagship Montepulciano and Trebbiano varieties, their pursuit of excellence keeps them testing new grapes to find the fullest expression of their land. A brilliant result of this exploration is the Cadetto Pinot Grigio.

  • The Profile: A striking straw yellow with golden highlights. It features complex aromas of white fruits, delicate flowers, and prominent mineral notes.

  • The Palate: Medium-bodied, balanced, and refreshingly dry. Bright flavors of fresh peach, grapefruit, and lemon lime deliver a smooth, well rounded finish with crisp acidity.

  • Perfect Pairings: Designed for lightness and freshness, it pairs wonderfully alongside fresh salads, grilled white fish, or raw oysters on a sunny patio.

From an 18th century surgeon's countryside escape to a modern masterpiece shaped by racing engineers, every single bottle from Podere Castorani tells a beautiful story of uncompromising quality, deep passion, and timeless Italian tradition.
