Chasing the Riverland Sun: Flavor, Family, and True Sustainability with Oxford Landing
There is a distinct magic that happens when the day begins to give way to the night. Picture this: you’re sitting by the water's edge, watching the sunset mirror its golden descent on the river. The local wildlife begins its evening chorus, and you’re easing into a night around the fire. It’s that perfect, fleeting balance between peace and exhilaration.
This exact feeling of playful tranquility is what the Hill-Smith family set out to capture in their Oxford Landing Sun Chasing Pinot Grigio.
But when you pour a glass of this vibrant white wine, you aren’t just enjoying a delicious drink, you are tasting over half a century of South Australian history, passionate community camaraderie, and a deep, unwavering commitment to the earth.
In the Glass: Freshness Meets Complexity
Pale straw in color yet wonderfully weighty in texture, the Sun Chasing Pinot Grigio immediately engages the senses. It exhales inviting aromas of poached pears, custard apples, and freshly baked apple pie.
On the palate, it delivers layers of rich, baked apple flavors. Because it is crafted with 100% natural fermentation utilizing indigenous yeasts, the wine possesses a unique depth. Following fermentation, it was left on its yeast lees for three months and stirred weekly, imbuing it with a deliciously creamy finish adorned by a soft, lively acidity.

Born from Visionary Roots: The Oxford Landing Story
To truly understand what makes this wine special, you have to look back to 1958. It takes an incredible amount of vision to stare at a patch of sunburnt red soil and imagine a thriving vineyard bursting with fruit. But that is exactly what the late Wyndham "Wyndy" Hill-Smith, a Yalumba winemaker, artist, and visionary, did.
Alongside production manager Norm Hanckel, Wyndy traveled the rugged landscape in his Buick. As painters, they fell in love with Mother Nature's palette: the vivid red soil, clear blue skies, towering gum trees, and sunlight dancing on the River Murray. Wyndy was drawn to a specific property for its rich soil, excellent drainage, and proximity to the water.
The hand planting of the vineyard provided the nearby town of Waikerie with much needed employment, sparking a sense of pride that still exists today. What started as a bold vision evolved over decades. In 1990, Wyndy’s son, Robert Hill-Smith, officially launched the Oxford Landing wine brand, the culmination of over 30 years of hard work.
Tasted, Made, and Bottled in South Australia
Authenticity and provenance mean everything to the team. Every single bottle of Oxford Landing wine is grown, made, and bottled right at their winery in South Australia. This guarantees absolute traceability, quality, and consistency.
For the Hill-Smith family, wine is the ultimate expression of place and community. By keeping every step of production local, they provide a living for the passionate community members who share their winemaking heart and soul.
The Riverland: A Perfect Grape Growing Paradise
The Riverland is an arid part of the world, but it boasts a magnificent secret recipe for premium winemaking:
A warm Mediterranean climate
Abundant sunshine
Fertile red soil
The lifeblood of the region: the longest single river in Australia
Surrounded by unique native vegetation, these 300 hectares of vines absorb the rugged energy of the landscape, ultimately translating into more vibrant flavor in your glass.
Sustainability Beyond the Vineyard: The Oxford Landing Ethos
When Oxford Landing talks about "bringing life," they mean it literally. They are completely dedicated to protecting the environment and ensuring their footprint is as light as possible. Here is a look at their sustainable ethos:
The Revegetation Project (Bringing Back the Wildlife) Launched in 2007 and spearheaded by the late, former vineyard manager Bill Wilksch, Oxford Landing purchased 600 hectares of unused farmland next to the vineyard. They devoted themselves to replanting native flora, successfully returning native fauna back to the region. To date, over 200,000 native trees and shrubs have been planted in a dedicated conservation area.
100% Vegan (And Long Before It Was a Trend) While many modern wineries are just now pivoting to meet the demand for vegan products, Oxford Landing has been entirely vegan-friendly since 2008. Traditional winemaking often relies on animal-derived fining agents like milk, egg, or gelatine. Oxford Landing guarantees that zero animal products are used in their production line, ensuring a pure, natural drop.
Conscious Resource Management As Sustainable Winegrowing Australia (SWA) accredited growers, the team continuously looks for ways to innovate:
Lightweight Glass: They have purposefully transitioned to lighter-weight glass bottles and recyclable cartons to reduce transport emissions and carbon footprints.
Water Conservation: In an arid landscape, water is gold. Oxford Landing proudly recycles 100% of their winery wastewater and strictly limits environmental water usage.
Bring the Life to Your Next Gathering
At its core, the Riverland’s true appeal is its undeniable sense of camaraderie. It’s found in the banter over a beer at the local pub, the friendly wave from passing boats, and the family barbecues at the picturesque riverside pump house.
When you share a bottle of Oxford Landing Sun Chasing Pinot Grigio, you aren't just opening a bottle of wine. You are bringing that warm, contagious community spirit, an emphatic support for native wildlife, and the playful tranquility of the river to your table.
Bring the life. Chase the sun.
